He was killed in a racially motivated attack on December 20, 1986. Griffith and his friends stopped at New Park Pizza in Howard Beach, Queens after their car broke down. They were confronted by a group of youths at the pizza parlor. They were beaten and chased. Griffith fled onto nearby highway where he was struck and killed by a car.
