The advances of the fascist regime are a horror show.

The past year has been very difficult. The U.S. Constitution is barely in effect. The U.S. has the most un-American president in history. The deliberate destruction of democratic institutions by his administration and his supporters is never ending. Tragedy and death are a constant. It is hard to fight off a feeling of helplessness.

Fascism thrives on a creating crisis after crisis. Fascism survives on intimidation and murderous violence.

In February 2025, I posted on MemorialsNewYork a brief history of fascism in the U.S. and fighting fascism in 2025.

It is now March 2026. In coping, it is important to remember. It is necessary to document the rise of fascism in the U.S. in the last year - so as all of it does not go down the memory hole as George Orwell wrote of in his novel"1984".

The doom scroll.

Here is a partial list from 2025 and the first few months of 2026:

• ICE killing of Renee Good

• ICE killing of Alex Pretti

• Greenland threats

• Supporting Putin/Russia in splintering European Union and NATO

•Trump creation of the "Board of Peace"

• Kidnapping and deporting citizens and green card holders

• Detaining people at mandatory immigration hearings at federal immigration courts

• Kidnapping of Maduro (president of Venezuela)

• Federal/Republican takeover of 2026 midterm voting.

• Kennedy Center renaming (adding Trump name)

• Attack on U.S. immigration

• appointing unqualified Trump biased federal prosecutors

• Prosecuting political opposition and enemies

• Criminalizing lawful protest

• ICE and other federal police (Border patrol ATF, DEA, etc) as Trump private army

• ICE kidnapping on streets and USCIS offices

• ICE and National Guard invasions of LA, Minneapolis, etc

• Trump calling Somali citizens and immigrants in Minneapolis "garbage."

• ICE "arrests" and searches without warrants

• the building of ICE immigration detention centers

• Elon Musk

• DOGE

• the rise of billionaires, tech firms, cryptocurrency and artificial intelligence companies

• Destruction of non-partisian FBI and Justice Dept.

• Packing federal courts with Trump Judges

• The destruction of the "three branches of government" checks and balance system

• Settlement extortion of US universities, law firms and media companies.

• Attacking diversity programs (DEI) in business, government, and academia.

• Attack on LGBTQ rights

• Removal of slavery references at National Park sites

• Support attacks and destruction by Israeli military on Gaza civilians

• Iran war by U.S. and Israeli military (February 2026)

• Bombing of Teheran and Beirut civilian areas

• Narrative of 2020 voting fraud to justify nullifying 2026 midterm election results

• Ignoring congressional War Powers Act

• The rise of Christian Nationalism in the U.S.

• Detaining travelers at airports based on social media posts

(you can add to this doom scroll in the comments section)

However, there are glimmers of hope as well.

Look at the election of Mayor Mamdani in New York on November 4, 2025 as an example. Look at the issue of economic "affordability" as a unifying theme of opposition.

Resistance is often confusing and depressing. Where to focus? What to do? Will resistance put friends and family in jeopardy?

In my opinion, "Rise and Resist" and "Hands Off" are a good places to start.

"No Kings" will have another major march and demonstration in cities around the world on March 28, 2026.

Many graffiti and street artists are putting work in public areas.

Trump is a sees himself as king now. In my view he likely sees himself as a god as well. The White House staff and MAGA supporters view him as a king and a god. Christian religious fanaticism is a big part of his support for the agenda. In a most recent example, U.S. troops were told that the U.S. - Israel war on Iran was all part of gods divine plan.

All kinds of resistance, demonstration and protest are essential to push back and fight the fascist regime takeover of our culture and society.
